First 5 Like and Dislike.

First 5 like and dislikes in Graphic Design.

Like

  1. Simple design. (Dieter Rams -  Braun)
  2. Illustrated film posters (Peter Strausfeld and his designs for The Academy cinema chain).
  3. Saul Bass, all his work but especially his grid work, like the grid used in the titles of North by North West.
  4. Really good art direction, Vaughan Oliver has a great eye for layout.
  5. Narrative or storytelling, it could have the complexity of Kyle Cooper’s titles for Seven or be a far simpler poster.

Dislike

  1. Design that is more complicated than need be.
  2. Finance stifling creativity, in the case of film posters the distributors would often not pay for illustrators after 1985/6 when photoshop like programmes emerged.
  3. Squiggly illustrations – like Paul Davis, it has to be very clever to work for me, the US satirists James Thuber for example.
  4. Grapus – Philosophical French political pretentiousness.
  5. In some areas Graphic Design has not evolved with any great flair, this might be because designers like Bass and Rand created sutch high benchmarks they could not be bettered.
